Splantzia

“Splantzia”
is a corruption of the old Venetian word for a Plaza.  During the Ottoman era it was predominantly a
Turkish neighbourhood, extending south and east of the walled hill of Kastelli
in the old town of Chania. The central square became the Turkish mahalas of the
town and, although today its formal name is the 1821 Square, the name of
Splantzia continues to define this ancient quarter.

During the
Ottoman period, the church of St. Nicholas in the Square, previously part of a
Dominican monastery, was converted and became to the city’s central mosque in
honor of the Sultan Ibrahim. Today it is the only building in Greece that
features both a belfry and a minaret. On the north western side of the Square
the Venetian church of San Rocco, a round floor plan Venetian church stands unaffected
by the Ottoman Empire and the subsequent upheavals.

In
the center of the Splantzia Square stands a huge plane tree in whose shade the
visitor can today linger over a coffee or a raki.  However, long ago, this was the site of an
octagonal Arab kiosk where state officials, eminent beys and agas would gather;
during the Ottoman occupation the tree was the site of the torture and
execution of dissident Greek Christians.
During the Revolution of 1821 it was the scene of the hanging of the
Bishop of Kissamos, Melchizedek Despotaki.
The Square has a memorial plaque and the date lives on in the current
name.

Between the
church of St. Nicholas and the tree in Splantzia you can still see the access
stairs to the old Turkish underground cisterns surrounded by rails. The tanks here had the
capacity to provide water for the city of Chania for up to six months.

In recent
years the Splantzia quarter has been redeveloped and its ruined houses and dark
lanes have been transformed into a popular neighborhood with cafes, taverns and
restaurants, boutique hotels and restored private homes bringing together the
many cultures that have passed through Chania and left their marks on this
lovely town.
