Thessaloniki is one of the prefectures of the Periphery of Central Macedonia in Greece. Its capital is the city of Thessaloniki. It is the second most popular and largest city in the country. It is also the second major economic, commercial, industrial and political center. Its commercial port is very important for Greece and the southeastern Europe. Thessaloniki is considered northern Greece's cultural and educational center. You can find many Byzantine and Paleochristian monuments, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The places you can visit in the city of Thessaloniki is the center with many Byzantine and Paleochristian monuments. On the seaside of the center you can find many cafeterias and bars. You can also visit the area near the port, called Ladadika, which is the most visited by locals due to the great taverns, restaurants, bars and clubs. Also don't forget to visit the Ano Poli or Old City. It's one of the prettiest areas of Thessaloniki with many traditional taverns, cafes and restaurants, with old houses, small alleys and beautiful views on the city and on the Thermaikos Gulf.
On the east from Thessaloniki prefecture is located the peninsula of Chalkidiki, featuring a great number of tourist resorts, hotels and beautiful beaches. On the southwest from Thessaloniki you will find another prefecture, also a tourist resort, the prefecture of Pieria with a huge number of archeological monuments
and beaches.
